Object Lock Legal Hold overview

A legal hold prevents an object version from being overwritten or deleted. Unlike a retention period, a legal hold has no expiration date and remains active until it is removed.

Legal holds operate independently of retention periods. If Object Lock is enabled for the bucket, you can apply or remove a legal hold regardless of whether the object version has a retention period.

Applying a legal hold does not change the retention mode or retention period of the object version.

View the legal hold status for a file

You can view the legal hold status of an individual file on the Properties tab.

Select the file and click Files > Properties
Select a file and click Files > Properties.
The Properties tab will open:
The Legal Hold row shows the current status.
The Legal Hold row displays ON or OFF. Click the status link to change it.

Apply legal hold to one or multiple files

CS Browser can update the legal hold status for one or multiple files or folders.

To update the legal hold status:

Select one or more files or folders, then click:
Files > Object Lock > Legal hold.. > ON
or
Files > Object Lock > Legal hold.. > OFF
Select ON or OFF under Files > Object Lock > Legal hold..
CS Browser will update the legal hold status for the selected files.

Apply legal hold to all files in a bucket

You can also update the legal hold status for every file in a bucket. CS Browser uses multiple concurrent tasks to process large buckets more quickly.

To update the legal hold status for all files in a bucket:

Select the bucket, then click:
Buckets > Object Lock > Update legal hold for all objects > ON
or
Buckets > Object Lock > Update legal hold for all objects > OFF
Select ON or OFF under Update legal hold for all objects.
CS Browser will enumerate the files in the bucket and update the legal hold status for each file. You can monitor the operation on the Tasks tab.

Apply legal hold automatically during upload

Use Object Lock Retention Rules to apply a legal hold automatically when matching files are uploaded.

To create an automatic legal hold rule:

Click Tools > Object Lock Retention Rules..
Click Tools > Object Lock Retention Rules..
The Object Lock Retention Rules dialog will open:
Object Lock Retention Rules
Click Add. The Add New Object Lock Retention Rule dialog will open:
Add a rule that places a legal hold on matching files.
Enter the bucket name or mask and the remote file name or mask.
Check Place a legal hold on an object version.
Click Add.
