Uploading and Downloading Files to and from Amazon S3

How to Upload Files and Folders to Amazon S3

With CS Browser, you can upload individual files, multiple files, or entire folders to Amazon S3.

The transfer engine has been actively developed and tested since 2008. It supports secure, reliable, and high-speed transfers.

To Upload Files or Folders

  1. Start CS Browser and select the destination bucket. If necessary, you can also create a new Amazon S3 bucket.

    You can also create or open a folder inside the bucket and upload your files there.

  2. Open the Files menu and choose:

    • Files -> Upload file(s) to upload one or more files.
    • Files -> Upload folder(s) to upload one or more folders.

  3. Select the files you want to upload.

    The upload begins immediately. You can track its progress on the Tasks tab.

    Use the context menu to start or stop selected tasks, cancel them, or retry failed tasks.

    With CS Browser Pro you can significantly increase uploading speed. To learn how to upload your files to Amazon S3 at the maximum speed possible, click here.

    CS Browser automatically saves unfinished transfer tasks. After you restart the application, restored tasks appear on the Tasks tab in a stopped state; start them again from the context menu. For multipart uploads, CS Browser reuses the existing upload and uploads only parts that have not already been completed. Multipart uploads that are no longer in the task queue can be resumed or aborted under Tools -> Uncompleted Multipart Uploads... Learn more about uncompleted multipart uploads.

    To verify uploaded and downloaded data, enable data integrity checking under Tools -> Options.. -> Data Integrity. Learn more about data integrity checking.

How to Download Files and Folders from Amazon S3

  1. Start CS Browser and select the bucket that contains the files or folders you want to download.

  2. Select the files or folders you want to download, then click Download.

  3. Choose a destination folder on your local disk, then click Select Folder.

    CS Browser queues the downloads and shows their progress on the Tasks tab.

    Use the Tasks context menu described above to start or stop selected downloads, cancel them, or retry failed tasks.

    If you are downloading many small files, increasing the number of concurrent downloads can improve performance. See How to Increase Upload and Download Speed below.

How to Download an Entire Amazon S3 Bucket

Downloading an entire bucket with one command is available in CS Browser Pro.

  1. Select the bucket and choose Buckets -> Download all files to...

    The Select Folder dialog will open.

  2. Select a destination folder and click Select Folder. CS Browser creates a subfolder named after the bucket inside the selected folder and downloads the bucket's contents into it.

How to Increase Upload and Download Speed

CS Browser Pro supports more concurrent uploads and downloads. This can improve performance when transferring many small files or parts of large multipart transfers.

Open Tools -> Options.. -> Queueing and adjust Maximum number of concurrent uploads and Maximum number of concurrent downloads. Running more than two uploads or more than two downloads concurrently requires CS Browser Pro. Learn more about faster transfers or upgrade to CS Browser Pro.
